How noise loggers work
A noise logger is fixed magnetically or by clamp to a pipe fitting inside a chamber. Because leak noise is masked by daytime demand, loggers record during the quietest window (typically 02:00–04:00). They measure the level and spread/consistency of the sound: a real leak generates a steady, narrow-band noise, while transient demand does not. Permanent loggers transmit each night to a cloud platform that flags suspect pipes and, where loggers correlate, computes the leak position between neighbouring units.
How to choose a noise logger
- Pipe material drives the sensor choice. Accelerometers suit metal and AC pipe; hydrophones are far better on plastic and large-diameter mains.

Accelerometer or hydrophone — which sensor is better?
Accelerometers couple to the pipe wall and work well on metal and asbestos-cement pipe. Hydrophones detect the pressure wave directly in the water and perform far better on plastic and large-diameter mains, which transmit structure-borne sound poorly. For mixed or plastic networks, hydrophone-capable loggers find leaks that accelerometers miss.
NB-IoT or LoRaWAN for noise loggers?
NB-IoT uses licensed cellular spectrum with strong penetration into underground chambers and needs no network of your own, which suits scattered or deep-chamber deployments. LoRaWAN is cheaper to run where you already operate gateways and suits dense urban roll-outs. The right choice depends on chamber depth, density and whether you want to own the network.
How accurate are noise loggers at finding leaks?
Detection reliability depends on pipe material, logger spacing, background noise and sensor type. On metallic networks with correctly spaced loggers, leak presence is detected with high confidence; correlating loggers then position the leak typically within a metre or two over moderate spacings.
